Hotel Indigo: Early Phase Construction Begins

Construction is underway on the future Hotel Indigo development in downtown Wichita, located within the historic Petroleum Building and McLellan Hotel along South Broadway. Early-phase work is currently focused on preparing the existing structures for redevelopment. All eight floors of the Petroleum Building are in the process of being fully cleaned out, clearing the way for upcoming construction activities.

Conco is working in close coordination with Shelden Architecture, preserving all historically significant features of the building at every stage of the renovation. Asbestos abatement is scheduled to occur over the next several weeks and represents a critical step in safely advancing the project.

Project Background

The project encompasses two adjacent historic buildings: the five-story McLellan Hotel (formerly known to many as the O’Rourke Title Building), constructed in 1923, and the eight-story Petroleum Building, originally built in 1929 as the Ellis-Singleton Building and renamed in 1942. The Petroleum Building was notably the first structure in Wichita to include a connected nine-level ramp garage.

Located along South Broadway between William and English Streets, the buildings are separated by an existing parking lot and are both listed on the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The Petroleum Building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Scope & Schedule

Upon completion, the two buildings will be connected by a new single-story structure and converted into Hotel Indigo under the IHG brand. The finished development will include 119 guest rooms, along with a standalone bar and restaurant.

Project completion and hotel opening are anticipated in 2027.
